The role

Job Purpose
As part of Leadership Team, the Legal Director will provide the legal function to the Company. The Legal Director will also be part of the Company Leadership in broader terms, with an active role and voice in the major strategic decisions affecting the Company and its direction.

Key Responsibilities
• To develop and implement plans relevant to the department;
• To create a legal framework based on the contractual setup of the organisation;
• To appropriately manage legal risk for the Company in its commercial operations;
• To review and recommend changes and improvements to the current contractual framework existing within the organisation;
• To act as in-house legal representation on all relevant matters;
• To provide advice and support to the CEO on matters with a legal element;
• To work with external legal bodies on matters of a legal nature that need to be externalised;
• To provide and source appropriate legal advice and support for the Company externally as needed;
• To work closely with other members of the LT in the interests of the Company and to actively participate in leadership team decision making;
• To maintain a currency in respect of changes to employment and Company law legislation;
• To manage legal costs and to minimise exposure to external legal organisations;
• To offer legal advice to the shareholders/ owners as needed;
• To attend and organise board meetings, to ensure board papers are constructed and produced according to the board calendar and to take and distribute minutes of board meetings.

Emergency Response
• To be prepared to respond, in a crisis, as legal officer and part of the LT; to liaise with insurers as relevant;

• Be aware of personal health and safety and the health and safety of others at work.

Essential Skills and Qualifications
• Professional legal qualification (solicitor or barrister, or foreign jurisdiction equivalent);
• Strong legal skills, including excellent communication, drafting and negotiation skills;
• Commercial acumen;
• Ability to appropriately weigh legal risk against commercial drivers;
• Up to date knowledge of commercial and contract law;
• Working knowledge of risks/areas of other relevant law;
• Excellent interpersonal skills and a proactive approach to work;
• Strong team player with the ability to work with a high degree of autonomy;
• Confident, approachable and enthusiastic.

Desirable Skills
• Demonstratable experience of working within an in-house function, preferably working as sole counsel or as part of a small, flexible legal team;
• Demonstratable experience of the rotor aviation sector (advantageous);
• Resilience in a fast-paced working environment.
